Rajaram College, established in 1880, is named after Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj (Second). He played an important role in “Education of Masses” in the Princely State of Kolhapur. He was the Rajah of Kolhapur for only four years and passed away at an young age of 20 in Florence, Italy. Spread over an beautiful area of 61 acres, the college is run by the State Government of Maharashtra. The college has a junior wing and senior wing. The college imparts education in Science, Arts and Commerce stream. With a legacy of almost 145 years, the campus has separate buildings housing different departments. The departments are equipped with classrooms, laboratories, research laboratories and museums. The museums in Botany, Zoology and Geology is a treasure to behold of specimens.
The pride of our college is “Dr. Balkrishna Granthalaya”. The library has a rich collection of historical manuscripts, Books, Reference books in many languages apart from the regular books necessary for the students. National and International Research Scholars visit the library regularly to do their reference work.
Established in 1880, the college has produced great students who have excelled in the field of Research, Education, Literature, Sports and Politics. Gopal Krishna Gokhale, the mentor of Mahatma Gandhi, was the first student of batch 1880. Vice President Shri B.D. Jatti, Chief Ministers of Maharashtra Shri Yashwantrao Chavan and Shri Shivajirao Bhosale have been our Alumni.
The Alumni Dr. Arun Nigvekar, Dr. Vishnu Naralikar, Dr. Abhay Ashtekar, Dr. Shivram Bhoje have contributed in Science and Academics. Dr. Kshitij Kulkarni was part of IAEA which received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2005.
Dr D.Y. Patil and Dr. S.B. Mujumdar, our Alumni, have changed the face of Education in India by creating Educational campuses of International Standards throughout India and abroad. Dr. D.C. Pavate, Dr. G.D. Yadav. Dr. Nitin Karmalkar, Dr Manikrao Salunkhe have worked as Vice Chancellors in different universities. Dr. Yashwant Thorat has worked as Chairman of NABARD and Reserve Bank of India.
In Sports, Shri. Khashaba Jadhav won the first Olympic Gold at Helsinki Olympics in 1952 in Wrestling. Many Sportsman from our college have since won medals at National and International levels in different sports.
Kolhapur is also called “Kalanagari”. Different Art forms have flourished in this land. Rajaram College has produced great artists in different forms. Poet P. Savalaram, Poet Indira Sant, writer Vijaya Rajdhyaksha, Ranjit Desai, actors like Ramesh Dev, Hrishikesh Joshi, R. Mahadevan are our Alumni.
Many of our Alumni have made a name in the Indian army and Police Department. Many of our Alumni have been felicilated by highest civilian awards like Padmabhushan, Padmashree, Dyanpeeth and other awards. Many of our Alumni have played a significant role in the freedom struggle as students of this college.
