Association of Fungal Biologists (AFB) is a scientific body constituted with a broad interest in the advancement of mycology and caters to the needs of mycologists worldwide. The association was formed with a view of bringing together the mycologists with the broad objectives of promoting and disseminating knowledge on different facets of mycology from a wide perspective. The Association is not only restricted to the Indian subcontinent, but also extends an invitation to international mycologists to join it for furtherance. The major emphasis has been laid on the application of mycology to harness the biotechnological potential of micro fungi and macro fungi for human welfare. There are over 275 members including professionals, researchers, budding mycologists and students with varied interests and capabilities in fungal taxonomy, phylogeny, ecology, pathology, physiology, genetics, molecular biology, forestry, biotechnology, and other allied fields. The society is not only restricted to the Indian subcontinent, but also extends an invitation to international mycologists to join it for furtherance.
Our Mission in Action
Since the beginning of 2024, AFB has emerged as a leading force in advancing fungal science, education, and collaboration across national and international platforms. Its work has touched on critical themes such as biotechnology, sustainability, drug resistance, and fungal diversity, while remaining deeply committed to building knowledge and strengthening community among students, researchers, and entrepreneurs.
Through a series of high-impact international seminars and conferences, AFB has brought together experts from around the world to share insights on fungal biotechnology, cosmeceuticals, mycelium-based materials, and cutting-edge applications in health and environment. Events such as the International Conference on the Role of Fungi in Sustainable Development in Pune and the celebration of World Fungus Day 2024 showcased the growing global relevance of fungal science and the vital contributions of Indian and international researchers.
The MycoTalk webinar series, jointly organized with partners like MycoIndia and MycoAsia, became a regular feature in 2024 and 2025, offering engaging and accessible talks on topics ranging from fungal peptides and pigment production to phylogenetics, lichen biodiversity, and drug discovery. These sessions have played a crucial role in popularizing fungal research and connecting seasoned professionals with young minds eager to explore the field.
AFB has also invested significantly in nurturing the next generation of fungal biologists. Through specialized workshops on research paper writing, publication ethics, and software tools like MEGA for phylogenetic analysis, the organization has empowered early-career researchers with the skills and confidence to engage in high-quality scientific work. These efforts reflect AFB's vision of capacity building and scientific integrity.
In addition to academic growth, AFB has actively supported innovation and entrepreneurship in fungal science. The Startup Lecture Series brought forward voices from pioneering fungal startups, highlighting real-world applications of fungi in nutrition, sustainable materials, waste transformation, and biotechnology. Collaborations with a wide range of institutions—including Vidacity Singapore, CBEC, SCSB, and the Indian Lichenological Society—further reinforced AFB’s role as a multidisciplinary connector and thought leader.
As AFB moves forward, it remains committed to expanding the reach and impact of fungal biology. By combining research excellence, community engagement, and a strong interdisciplinary approach, AFB continues to shape the future of mycology, both in India and globally.
